Mobile Internet to overtake desktop by 2015?NEW research produced by Morgan Stanley analysts predicts that the number of mobile Internet users will exceed desktop Internet users by 2015. It's a bold statement and beats many previous forecasts by about five years. However, whilst the forecast is broadly consistent with other analyst data, the Morgan Stanley data includes non-cellular devices within its definition of the mobile internet, including music players and handheld games consoles. Progress will be enhanced as 3G penetration rises in most territories in the next four years. By 2014, Morgan Stanley predicts that 3G penetration will reach 100 per cent in Japan, 92 per cent in Western Europe, 74 per cent in North America, 40 per cent in Eastern Europe, 37 per cent in Asia Pacific, 35 per cent in Middle East and Africa and 17 per cent in Central and South America. The research predicts global 3G penetration will be 43 per cent, or 2.78 billion users, by 2014. The conclusion to the research is that 3G roll out will be the key to mobile Internet success.
