Location based services battle hots up as Gowalla squares up to Foursquare

GOWALLA, the location based service that allows users to check-in to bars, restaurants and clubs, has this week given the go ahead for developers to use software to interact with Gowalla and its data.

This will see Gowalla go head to head with Foursquare as social media users increasingly look to share their location.

Last month Foursquare had 100 million check-ins, having just signed up its two millionth member. However, by opening up its API, developers should be able to produce a larger number of third party applications being built around the site.

Currently, only one per cent of internet users globally check-in to a location based service on a weekly basis. This compares with 11 per cent who use Twitter and 28 per cent who use Facebook.
