SYMBOLICS, the Massachusetts-based computer maker was the first entity to get a .com domain name – twenty five years ago today.

They were followed by Bbn.com and Think.com.

The demand for .com domain names was low for the initial years. Only six domains were registered in the first year, compared with the 100,000 that are now registered everyday.

Symbolics.com was purchased by XF.com, an Internet domain investment firm, in 2009. Symbolics.com now serves as the blog of XF.com.

Mark McLaughlin, CEO of VeriSign spoke about the historic day: “Who would have guessed 25 years ago where the internet would be today and the number of businesses that have been built on it.”

VeriSign is the body that manages .com and .net domain names on the internet today.
