Nokia planning enhanced location based services with MetaCarta purchase

NOKIA, the Finnish handset giant, is set to purchase MetaCarta in order to offer enhanced location based services.

MetaCarta is an expert in geographic intelligence and Nokia has revealed that the company’s technology will be made functional in the area of “local search in location and other services".

MetaCarta’s technology is distributed as a hosted app or as a web service and the technology functions with maps viewed on browser based or on a mobile device.

Nokia has been on a mission to improve its location based services ever since it acquired Navteq three years ago for $8.1 billion.
