Twitter: 5 billion tweets and countingMICRO-blogging site Twitter, has passed the 5 billion tweets mark, as an early adopter of the site, Robin Sloan, tweeted ‘Oh Lord’. Having passed the one billion tweet mark last November, it’s taken the site less than a year to quintuple that figure according to Gigatweet. CNet is reporting that the 5 billionth tweet was delivered by an early adopter of Twitter rather than one of the marketers or celebs that have flooded the site in the last year or so. Sloan’s ‘Oh Lord’ tweet was probably an unintentional moment of revelation and has been nicknamed "The Pentagigatweet” in some circles. The service was only up to 1.6 billion tweets in April this year, so about 3.4 billion tweets have been sent in about the past 6 months. By anybody’s standards, that’s an incredible rate of growth. Sloan, the originator of the 5 billionth tweet, is a San Francisco based tech-geek who has recently left his job to work on his novel"Mr. Penumbra's Twenty-Four-Hour Book Store." That’s a very convenient piece of publicity Mr Sloan! Twitter’s rapid growth, has fuelled speculation as to its worth – at a recent round of funding the business was said to be worth approximately $1 billion. Leave your comments: |
