Finland makes broadband a legal right

FINLAND has become the world’s first country to make broadband internet access a legal right, coming good on a promise that was first reported by iSM some months ago.

Telecoms businesses will now be obliged to provide broadband connections to all Finns. With more than 90 per cent of Finland’s five million population having access to high-speed broadband, the country is already one of the most internet-connected nations in the world.

Every Finn must now be provided with a reasonably fast broadband connection – problematic as in rural areas, mobile internet quality of service is often poor.

In part, the move will bring efficiencies as the Finnish government is looking to develop online public service provision.
