Twitter buys text message company

TWITTER has announced that it had acquired Cloudhopper, a Seattle text-messaging start-up.

Twitter, which was born out of text messaging, has gone back to its roots. Tweets were designed to be the length of text messages, 140 characters.

Twitter are now exploring the “untapped potential” with Twitter text-message use, Evan Williams, a Twitter co-founder said, “Mobile is clearly where the majority of usage will happen.” Twitter currently processes more than a billion SMS tweets a month.

Cloudhopper had already been working with Twitter to connect its service with mobile networks around the world, in part so that users did not have to pay extra to send or receive tweets via SMS.

Using Twitter by text messaging is especially useful in developing countries where people do not have Web-enabled phones.
