China jails woman over Twitter post

A CHINESE woman has been sentenced to a year in a labour camp following a post she made on the micro-blogging site Twitter.

The woman, who is the fiancée of human rights activist Cheng Jianping claimed her post had been a joke, but she had been accused of disrupting social order. She had retweeted a message urging nationalist protesters to smash the Japanese pavilion at the Shanghai Expo, adding the words "Charge, angry youth".

Twitter is banned in China, although it’s widely used by people who circumvent internet controls. The tweet in question was posted last month and has resulted in 46 year-old Cheng Jianping being given a year of “re-education through labour”.
