A quarter of UK using mobile internetA NEW Ofcom report has been published showing that almost a quarter of UK residents are accessing the internet using mobile devices. The figures recently released by Ofcom, the UK’s telecoms and communications regulatory body reveal that 23 per cent of the population conducts online activity from a mobile device, with social networking being the most popular online activity. Commenting on the report, entitled Communications Market 2010, Julian Jordan, Managing Director of North West marketing business, Brandspankin’, commented: “Smartphones are incredibly popular - and by 2015 sixty per cent of mobile devices will have a browser. With the advent of location based services, such as Foursquare and now Facebook Places, people will be able to benefit from much more contextual and proximity based offerings.” “The mobile marketing possibilities are fantastic and could benefit SMEs by providing highly measurable, high yield campaigns.” “The downside of all this though is that networks are under increasing pressure as bandwidth demand will impact upon net neutrality and consumers could see data charges increasing.”
