Social Media sees mobile data traffic surpass voice

SOCIAL media popularity with mobile users has driven global mobile data usage to a point where it now surpasses voice traffic, according to Ericsson.

Ericsson claims that data overtook voice usage in December 2009, with global data traffic having grown by 280 per cent during each of the last two years. Ericsson forecasts that it will double annually in each of the next five years.

The popularity of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace account for some of the surge in data usage. More than 100 million people use the mobile web to log on to social networks.
