Facebook set to acquire Hot Potato check-in service

A NUMBER of tech blogs are reporting that Facebook is in the latter stages of negotiations and close to buying Hot Potato, the social activity service.

The imminent deal would largely be a talent acquisition for Facebook and would be the sixth such deal in the last six months.

Having previously shown interest in both Loopt and Foursquare as potential acquisition targets, the acquisition of Hot Potato provides a location-based service that could ultimately see Facebook users moving towards check-ins.

Facebook's seemingly inevitable move towards location based services, could see brands utilising the world’s biggest social network to enhance customer loyalty and make offers.

Should the deal be finalised, the current Hot Potato service would probably be closed with its components appearing as Facebook features shortly thereafter.
