Google launches Nexus One smartphone

GOOGLE is set to launch its long anticipated smartphone – the Nexus One – tomorrow.

Fittingly for a phone named after the “replicants” in “Blade Runner”, the phone uses the Android mobile phone operating system and will see Google attempt to challenge the iPhone’s market dominance.

There have been suggestions that the Nexus One will be sold online at around $500 (£310), with the initial launch in the US and later in Europe.

Google launched the Android operating system nearly two years ago – as an open source technology, it has seen about a dozen phones launched by companies such as Samsung and Motorola – such as Motorola Droid.

The Android system is optimised for Google software applications and will enable the growth of mobile search and information services, as the phone becomes the primary way we access the internet over the course of the decade.
