The little bird helping people get home

Hazel Rycroft

TWITTER is trying to get thousands of stranded travellers home, after their travel plans were brought crashing down by the Icelandic volcano eruption. The Twitter networking community has had hundreds of posts from those stranded, denoted by a #getmehome hash-tag. Offers from many people are springing up, 'Got two seats in a car from Rome to dunkirk'.

The site is also offering encouragement to those stranded; people are joining together, offering lifts, asking for help and suggesting places to stay.

Facebook is also doing its bit, a group called Carpool Europe has been set up by the Swedish car-pool movement, it has lots of messages offering or seeking the chance to hitch a ride. Another, When Volcanoes Erupt: A Survival Guide for Stranded Travelers, is acting as an information service for travelers trying to get on the move, with pictures being posted of those stranded with placards saying, 'out of cash, due to ash'.

Duncan Bannatyne was also seen helping out those stranded, via Twitter:

"OK we can take 4 on the 3.40 ferry"
"We have 2 spare seats in car where are you?"
    "Tweet me a phone number"
"We are at front of passport control black Mercedes Van"

Similar attempts have been made by celebrities including Dan Snow, who started a Dunkirk inspired rescue with a flotilla of boats. Only to be shot down by French and British officials, only twenty five of those rescued made it back to Blighty.

So good luck to all the little tweeters in there efforts to tweet their way home!
