Smartphone sales up 41 per cent - Gartner

NEW RESEARCH published by research body Gartner has revealed that sales of mobile internet-based smartphones grew strongly in the final quarter of 2009.

Globally the handset market declined slightly, with total sales down by 0.9 per cent year on year. However, the smartphone sector saw strong growth across the year, according to Gartner.

The research found that 53.8 million of the internet-enabled devices were sold in Q4 of 2009, an increase of 41.1 per cent versus the same period in 2008. 172.4 million smartphones were sold over the year.

Gartner predicts that the overall handset market will return to "low double-digit growth" 2010.
