118 calls cost ‘three times more' than consumers think

CALLS to 118 directory enquiries services in the UK are three times more expensive than consumers think, according to research just published by consumer magazine Which?

Which? Questioned more than 2,000 of its members who came back with average 'guesstimates’ that calling a 118 service costs 33p from a landline and 64p from a mobile.

Typically calls from landlines to the two most-used 118 services – The Number's 118 118 and BT's 118 500 – are nearer £1, assuming the caller wrote down the number or received it via a free text. A mobile call can also cost £2 and does not guarantee an accurate number.

According to Which?, The scrapping of the BT 192 service by telecoms regulator Ofcom has led to higher charges and questionable service. BT’s old 192 service charged 40p per call before deregulation.
