Google voice coming soon?

GOOGLE Voice is a free Web-based application that gives you control over all your various phone numbers, it is currently only available in the US, but the message on the site says that it will soon be rolled out in other countries.

The technology allows you to control your work, home, mobile, numbers from a single, central phone number. And it includes the features call forwarding, voice mail, call recording.

You can forward calls to up to six other phones, make free text messages and phone calls, take voice mail messages, and set up four-person conference calls. You can also automatically receive and reply to text messages by e-mail.

You can set call preferences, certain people will get put through to all your numbers, other people can have preferences set so that they go straight to voicemail. Google can automatically transcribe messages and send them to my Gmail account.

The only hold back is that the i-phone will not support the Google Voice app so would have to go through the website.

From an information services point of view, a single number presents clear opportunities, but raises issues about the preservation of privacy.
